It’s been such a long time since I have involved myself in volunteer work, and watching last night’s concert made me realise just how much I miss it.
Though it was not as grand and complex as the twoa nation in concerts, the show moved my heart nonetheless, on several levels, unexpectedly.
Some special mentions:
1) MINDS Taiko Drum Troupe
They opened the show with a spellbinding drumming performance [which I have seen before somewhere.. company's Dinner & Dance? ANIC?], settling everyone down for the show ahead. Halfway through the performance, one kiddo forgot his solo and his mates got naturally confused and unsure as to how to continue playing. As we, the audience, watched from our seats, the other performers became increasingly frustrated with the kiddo, with some shouting at him [to try giving him his cue] and others displaying crestfallen expressions. Somewhere about, someone started clapping encouragingly, and it was not long before the entire hall burst into loud applause for them. The show must go on, and the show did go on.
Last Thursday, I ‘dragged’ KK to Prive for the official launch of Dominic’s charity coffee table book titled ‘Pure’.
Inspired by his late, altruistic mother, Dom decided to honour her memory by putting his energy [and talent, if I may add] into a project he feel would capture the real spirit of charity, and thus the idea of Pure was born.
Pure is a 50-page coffee table-sized photography book featuring well-known personalities such as Michelle Chia, May & Choy, Jaymee Ong, Utt and Ploy J., Charmaine Harn, Rebecca Tan and Celina Lin, laughing or crying in the nude. The personalities are part of a list of over 20 local and regional individuals who, ignited by Dominic’s passion for the project, have volunteered to bare all in this first-of-its kind coffee-table photography book.
100% of the sale of the books will go towards supporting various organisations such as SCW, Singapore After-Care Association and HOME, to name a few.
One day in Nihon, sister and I were watching the telly where there was a variety show introducing the J-dorama, Nodame Cantabile.
It seemed interesting so we plugged it as a to-watch show once we return.
Nodame Cantabile:
Shinichi Chiaki [Hiroshi Tamaki], is Momogaoka College of Music’s top student. Born into a musical family, he is talented in piano and violin and has secret ambitions to become a conductor. An arrogant multi-lingual perfectionist who once lived abroad in the music capitals of the world as a young boy, he feels mired in Japan because of a childhood phobia.
Megumi Noda [Ueno Juri], or “Nodame” is a piano student at Momogaoka College of Music. An extremely talented pianist who wants to be a kindergarten teacher, she prefers playing by ear rather than reading the music score. She is messy and disorganized, takes baths several days apart and loves to eat, sometimes stealing her friend’s lunchbox when it is filled with delicacies.
They meet by accident. Noda quickly falls in love, but it takes much longer for Chiaki to even begin to appreciate Noda’s unusual qualities. Their relationship causes them both to develop and grow. Because of Noda, Chiaki got the opportunity to lead a student orchestra and begins to have a broader appreciation of people’s musical abilities. Because of Chiaki, Noda faces her fears and enters a piano competition. Opportunities open up as both begin taking risks, stretching themselves far more than they ever thought possible.
Child of the wilderness
Born into emptiness
Learn to be lonely
Learn to find your way in darkness
Who will be there for you
Comfort and care for you
Learn to be lonely
Learn to be your one companion
Never dreamed out in the world
There are arms to hold you
You’ve always known your heart was on its own
So laugh in your loneliness
Child of the wilderness
Learn to be lonely
Learn how to love life that is lived alone
Learn to be lonely
Life can be lived, life can be loved alone
Why am I the only one who feels that something is wrong and everything is different? I can feel it, and I can’t do anything about it.
