Glee
Posted on Monday, February 1st, 2010 at 1:00 pmI’ve turned into a Gleek.
That’s right, you didn’t see wrong I didn’t spell it wrong. G. l. e. e. k.

Glee is a 2009 musical-comedy television series that focus on a high school show choir [also known as a Glee Club], called “New Directions!”, set within William McKinley High School. The show follows an optimistic teacher who - against all odds and nonsense - attempts to save the school’s Glee Club from obscurity, while helping a group of aspiring underdogs [read: losers, thus the "L" in Glee] realise their true star potential.

Glee won me over ten minutes into episode one when Rachel Berry sang my favourite song “On My Own” from the musical “Les Miserables”. I love him, I love him, I love him, but only.. on my own.. So. much. emotion. What you have here from Glee is a quintessential American high school with its jocks, nerds, bullies and oddballs, but it is also much more than that. It is not just about shallow kids with barely-adequate singing abilities floundering around, or teenagers with the whole I’m-too-cool-and-dark-for-you attitude you see in many dance movies. With a cast of fresh faces, the actors truly embody their characters, and sing their songs from their hearts [yes, they sang all the songs themselves]. And the humour, the little nuances of hilarity! It grows and clings onto you with each passing episode.

Glee, despite it being a high school musical, does not contend with sugar and spice and all things fluffy. In one of the episodes, a Glee Club showcase with the Haverbrook Deaf Choir’s song-signing item was so touching it had me in tears. In another episode, Glee Club were made to go about their daily life in school in wheelchairs - the teacher’s lesson to them about empathy.

Kurt Hummel’s my favourite character. He has a certain aloofness and air of superiority about him even when he gets bullied by the school jorks - it somewhat sets him apart from the other character. Oh, and I totally dig some of his outfits!

Boyfie was the one who pointed out Kurt’s unique ‘tie’. Mad <3! [Oh no, I really have a thing for quirky stuff!]
